The City and Its Double/La città e il suo doppio

About fifty years ago Mary McCarthy remarked that after fifteen centuries of intense representation in words and images it had become impossible to make an original observation about Venice. Including, presumably, that observation. As one might have put it in the jargon of PoMo, Venice exists always and already in the condition of a representation, which it shares in greater or lesser degrees with most cities. To know a city is to know it through representation first; to address it artistically is to come to terms with its representations. If successful, to turn them back upon themselves squeezing a (last?) drop of new meaning from them…

Circa cinquant’anni fa, Mary McCarthy faceva notare che dopo quindici secoli densi di rappresentazioni in forma di parola o di immagine, è diventato impossibile produrre una qualsiasi osservazione originale su Venezia. Compresa, presumibilmente, questa osservazione. Come si sarebbe detto nel gergo tipico del postmodernismo, Venezia esiste sempre già nella condizione della rappresentazione – una condizione che in misura diversa essa condivide con la maggior parte delle città. Conoscere una città significa conoscerla anzitutto attraverso la rappresentazione; trattarla dal punto di vista artistico significa fare i conti con le sue rappresentazioni. E, nel caso migliore, rivoltare queste rappresentazioni su se stesse, nel tentativo di spremerne una (ultima?) goccia di nuovo senso…
